Gymnastics: Bekah Dwyer-Valult

Westby’s Bekah Dwyer was twisting the night away during her vault.

The Westby Area High School gymnastics program is light on numbers, but Head Coach Kara Timmel is pleased with what she has seen already after the team competed at Arcadia and Tomah.

“We were thrilled to have full and nearly full JV rosters on each event,” Timmel said.

This year’s team includes; seniors, Savannah Kenyon and Emily Olson; junior, Bekah Dwyer; sophomore, Kaydan Jothen; freshman, Maggie Grethel, Nicole Klum, Emma Nelson, Teagan Rooney; and foreign exchange students Isabella Zacho, Valeria Nussbaumer, and Angie Nam.

Arcadia Quad

Westby kicked off its season on Tuesday, Dec. 12, traveling to Arcadia to compete in a quad with teams from Marshfield, Tomah, Arcadia. Marshfield won with 132.375 points and Westby finished third with 97.875 points.

Highlights at the varsity level included Dwyer finishing fifth in all around with 26.15 and Nussbaumer placed sixth with a score of 25.825. Nussbaumer also placed third on vault with 8.45.

Dwyer has competed on varsity since she was a freshman and is confident and poised while competing. Nussbaumer is enjoying her stay in the United States and has a depth of enthusiasm for the sport of gymnastics that should make her a force to be reckoned with all season.

In the top 20 for the Norse: vault, 3. Nussbaumer 8.45; 5. Dywer 7.950; 9. Emily Olson 7.60; 12. Teagan Rooney, 15 Kayden Jothen. Bars, 12. (tie) Nussbaumer and Dwyer; 15. (tie) Jothen and Olson; 18. Timmel said each of the girls will only get better, which should make it fun to watch as the season progresses.

“There were definitely some accomplishments tonight, but more so each girl now knows specific areas for improvement after their performances,” Timmel said.

Tomah Invite

The Norse gymnasts competed in the “Peppermint Twist” invitational last weekend at Tomah. Marshfield won the 8-team event with a score of 133.75 points, while Westby finished sixth with 107.725 points.
