Westby’s Ryan Knight earned a trip to the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Madison in Division 2 at 138 pounds. Knight earned a state berth placing third at the Richland Center Sectional on Feb. 17. The top three winners in each weight class advanced to State.
At Sectionals, Knight faced Traeton Saint of Prairie Du Chien in the wrestle back for second and third place, with Saint (49-4) picking up the win. Knight advanced to state in third place.
Seeded 11th for State, Knight’s time on the wrestling mat at the Kohl Center was short after he was eliminated by Northwestern senior, Calen Kirkpatrick (32-6) in the quarterfinals. Seeded sixth, Kirkpatrick pinned Knight at the 4:57 mark in the second period.
Knight put up a valiant battle to stay alive, but couldn’t hold on long enough to avoid the pinning combination. A junior, Knight finished his season with a record of 36-13.
Westby Head Coach Rob Kirner said earning a trip to state is something no athlete ever forgets and Ryan should be proud of his accomplishment.
“Westby has a longstanding tradition of developing quality wrestlers. I’m proud of all of our wrestling family and am looking forward to next season,” Kirner said.
