The Westby/Viroqua girls golf team began early season play very short-handed last week, competing in the Wisconsin Dells Invitational, Aug. 15-16. The co-op team, playing with just two golfers, could not compete as a team, but it didn’t stop Brooke Knutson, a senior at Viroqua High School, from turning in a very impressive early season performance, placing second overall among 36 players competing from eight schools.

Knutson fired a sizzling opening round 41 on the front nine and finished up with a 44 on the back nine for a first-day 18-hole score of 85 at the Coldwater Mountain/Chula Vista Resort Course. Reedsburg’s Caylee Beyer earned medalist honors, narrowly edging Knutson, with an 84. Molley Larson of Tomah matched Knutson, also with an 85.

Westby sophomore April Roth carded a 75/83 for an 18-hole total of 158 on day one.

Knutson, continued her consistent play on day two, playing at the Christmas Mountain Course, recording a 44 on the way out and a 47 coming in, on the back nine for an 18-hole total of 91, also good for a second-place finish. This time it was Larson grabbing medalist honors with an 88 and Sophie Denure of Portage placing third with a 93.

Roth showed marked improvement on day two, finishing with a 72/75 for a 142 total, shaving 16 strokes off her day one score at a much more difficult course.

Larson captured medalist honors over the two-day event, with a combined 85/88 for a 173. Knutson was right behind with her 85/91, for a 36-hole total of 176.

“The girls did a great job and the course at Christmas Mountain was pretty tough,” head coach HeidiSave and close Hubatch said. “Brooke did a great job with her drives and her putting and April did a great job on her drives and long shots.”
