Wrestling: Ryan Knight-Fond du Lac

Westby's Ryan Knight won by 6-4 decision over Jaden Scully (Oconomowoc) in action at the Marty oy Classisc on Dec. 16.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Westby traveled to Fond du Lac for the annual Marty Loy Classic.

Rob Kirner the Westby Varsity Wrestling Head Coach said the Norsemen grapplers wrestled well throughout the day at this very challenging tournament.

“It’s a great tournament for Westby to participate in because they run a Varsity and JV tournament, so the whole team gets to compete together. It also gives us the chance to wrestle against teams that we don’t normally see anywhere else on our schedule,” Kirner said.

Leading Westby at the end of the day were fifth place finisher Ryan Knight at 145 pounds; sixth place, Austin Mowery at 138 pounds; and eighth place, Logan Turben at 113 pounds.

In the fifth place match at 145 pounds, Knight (12-6) won by a 6-4 decision over Jaden Scully (12-5) of Oconomowoc. He received a bye in round one; pinned Brandon Lenczner of Oak Creek in round two; fell in round three to Logan Hatch of Hudson; pinned Jake Weismueller of Port Washington in round four; won by a 9-5 decision over Logan Naker of Fond du Lac in the fifth round to get to the fifth place match.

Austin Mowery

At 138 pounds, Mowery (11-6) fell in the fifth place match to place sixth overall. In round one, Mowery won by a 11-6 decision over Jordan Bonenbeger of Menomonee Falls; Mowery lost by technical fall to Sam Boerner of Cedarburg in round two; won by a 12-4 decision in round three to Evan Clark of Manitowoc Lincoln; won by an 11-6 decision over Colton Nicolay of Lodi in round four; and lost by a 13-4 decision to Braden Maertz of Kewaskum in the fifth place match. Mowery placed sixth.

Logan Turben At 113 pounds, Turben (6-5) placed eighth overall. In round one, Turben pinned Evan Pierce of Sheboygan Falls; Turben was pinned by Hayden Halter Burlington in round two; won by a 12-4 decision in round three over Dylan Weiss of Random Lake; was pinned in round four by Carsten McHugh of Freedom; and lost by a 14-5 decision to Matt Degreef-Taicher of Denmark. Turben placed eighth.

Other varsity level competitors surviving several rounds of competition in Fond du Lac included:

  • At 120 pounds, Dallas Geier survived three rounds including one bye and being pinned twice.
  • At 160 pounds, Justin Erdman survived three rounds including one bye and being pinned twice.
  • At 170 pounds, Conor Vatland survived four rounds including one bye, one decision loss, one decision win, and one time being pinned.

Westby hosted G-E-T on Thursday, Dec. 21 and will participate in the La Crosse Center Bi-State Classic over the holiday break on Dec. 28-29.
