Rob Kirner the Westby Varsity Wrestling Head Coach said the Norsemen grapplers are hungry for time on the mat and continue to fine tune their skills with each competition. The team picked up a 39-28 win against Weston/Ithaca on Nov. 7 and traveled to the Tomah Scramble on Dec. 9, where they placed sixth out of 16 teams.
Westby 39, Weston/Ithaca 28
A lack of wrestlers to compete at numerous weight classes resulted in six forfeits. Of the14 weight classes, Westby forfeited two matches at 285 and 170 pounds. Weston/Ithaca forfeited three matches at 120, 138 and 145. Both teams forfeited matches at 106 pounds.

The team honored parents prior to the match, the high school band played, the cheerleaders promoted school spirit and the team had plenty of unused energy left at the end of them night with so many forfeited matches.

At Tomah, Knight had a tough couple of matches wrestling against two state qualifiers; Mowery was in a loaded bracket; and Vatland and Turben wrestled strong against very tough opponents where the end results could have gone either way.
Kirner said, overall Westby wrestled well but there were a few matches we were ahead in late and ended up losing.
“We still need to work a little on closing out matches strong when we’re ahead and not giving away points by being over aggressive or out of position,” Kirner said.
On Saturday, Dec. 16, Westby travels to Fond du Lac and they host G-E-T on Thursday, Dec. 21.
