“Making the best of it” I don’t know how common the advice I got as a youngster is these days. I was taught to “do the best you can with what you’ve got.” Whatever your circumstances, be thankful and make do. Many times this was encouragement in the face of limited resources—hand me down clothes or adding bread crumbs to stretch a pound of hamburger to feed seven. Part of “making the best of it” was learning that taking good care of what we had made it last longer. When we could get something new, working a little harder and waiting a little longer to get quality made a lot of sense. It seems that perspective is often lost in today’s “throw away” mentality but, when it comes to owning a home, the old way is the best way.
