Notice of Open Book/Examination of Assessment Roll
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that pursuant to sec. 70.45 of the Wisconsin
Statutes, the 2023 Assessment Rolls for the City of La Crosse will be open
for examination on the following date:
Wednesday, June 28, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
If you wish to discuss your assessment or make an appointment during
Open Book, please contact the assessment office at 608-789-7525.
2023 assessments may be viewed on La Crosse County website under
Land Records/Parcel Search.
Notice of Board of Review Meeting
NOTICE IS FURTHER GIVEN that the Board of Review for the City of
La Crosse will meet for a minimum of two hours on Friday, July 7, 2023
at 10:00 a.m., in the Council Chambers of City Hall, 400 La Crosse Street,
La Crosse, Wisconsin to for the purpose of calling the Board of Review
into session and to consider objection notices filed and, if applicable,
order/schedule hearings, whereby sworn testimony from property owners
objecting to their property assessments will be taken pursuant to sec.
70.47(1), Wis. Stats. The following dates have been reserved if necessary
for the purpose of hearing objections if filings are deemed acceptable by
the Board of Review: Thursday, July 13 and Friday, July 14, 2023.
Instructional materials for anyone wishing to object to valuations under
sec. 70.47, Wis. Stats. can be obtained by contacting the City Clerk
608-789-7510 or the Assessor 608-789-7525.
A notice of intent to file an objection must be made to the City Clerk
at least 48 hours prior to the first meeting of the Board of Review.
A waiver of the 48-hour notice may be granted by the Board of Review
during the first two hours of the meeting on July 7, 2023, if the applicant
shows good cause for the failure to meet the 48-hour requirement.
The City Clerk can be reached by telephone at 608-789-7510 during
office hours Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. City Hall is open for
public access Monday – Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to file objections
with the City Clerk. If visiting on a Friday, please call the City Clerk’s Office
as the City Hall lobby is not open.
Be advised of the following requirements pursuant to sec. 70.47,
Wis. Stats.:
After the first meeting of the Board of Review and before the Board’s
final adjournment, no person who is scheduled to appear before the Board
of Review may contact, or provide information to, a member of the Board
about that person’s objection, except at a session of the Board.
No person may appear before the Board of Review, testify to the Board
by telephone, or contest the amount of any assessment unless, at least
48 hours before the first meeting of the Board or at least 48 hours before
the objection is heard, if the objection is allowed under s.70.47(3)(a), that
person provides to the Clerk of the Board of Review and/or Assessor notice
as to whether the person will ask for removal under s.70.47(6m)(a) and, if
so, which member will be removed and the person’s reasonable estimate
of the length of time that the hearing will take.
When appearing before the Board of Review, the person shall specify
in writing the person’s estimate of the value of the land and of the
improvements that are the subject of the person’s objection and specify the
information that the person used to arrive at that estimate.
No person may appear before the Board of Review, testify to the Board
by telephone or object to a valuation; if that valuation was made by the
Assessor or the objector using the income method; unless the person
supplies to the Assessor all of the information about income and expenses,
as specified in the manual under s. 73.03(2a), that the Assessor requests.
The municipality shall provide by ordinance for the confidentiality of
information about income and expenses that is provided to the Assessor
under this paragraph and shall provide exceptions for persons using the
information in the discharge of duties imposed by law or of the duties of
their office or by order of a court. The information that is provided under this
paragraph, unless a court determines that it is inaccurate, is not subject to
the right of inspection and copying under s. 19.35(1).
