Valley View Mall

A familiar face will be expanding into the former Macy’s location at Valley View Mall.

PREIT, the mall’s owner, announced Wednesday that Herberger’s will more than double in size when it opens in October at its new location. The department store, owned by The Bon-Ton Stores Inc., occupies a 42,000-square-foot space now. Herberger’s, which previously had a location in downtown La Crosse, was one of the mall’s first anchors when it opened in 1980.

“Right-sizing Herberger’s to meet the high-traffic shopping behaviors of the La Crosse region is another key milestone in our ambitious plan to replace closing anchor stores and better serve local consumers,” PREIT CEO Joseph F. Coradino said. “The expansion of Herberger’s to satisfy shopper demand is a testament to brand recognition in the marketplace, and we anticipate the larger space will drive further growth at Valley View Mall.”

PREIT recently bought the 100,000-square-foot space from Macy’s, which closed the store in March. The company is looking into its options for the current Herberger’s space, Valley View Mall Marketing Director Laurie Cafe said.

She said she has seen concepts and ideas floated around to the use the space for a grocery store, theater, green courtyard or workout facility. There is also the possibility to fill the location with another anchor store or divvy it up into a number of smaller stores.

“There are a lot of options being thrown our direction,” she said.

Herberger's has needed a larger store in La Crosse, they are a popular store and it was always so crowded. glad to hear they are staying in the mall.

Good for Herbergers. I buy some of their stuff. A theater is needed on the North side.
