Blast from the past

Driftless Dodger Matt "Huey" Hughes swings at the first pitch of the game. Pitching for the Apple Jacks is Gary "Big Wease" Pericak. Catching is Dan "Skunk" Deetz.

Playing at the Apple Jacks favorite road venue did not help Sept 9.

The beautiful field at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church was not a step into the win column. In the first game, the Jacks lost to the host Highland Prairie Hayseeds by a score of three aces to one. The ‘Seeds managed one run in the first inning and two in the last to spoil a fine pitching performance by Gary “Big Wease” Pericak. He was backed up by a fine defensive effort.

The second game provided a little more action as the Jacks faced the Driftless Dodgers of Decorah for the first time. However, the Dodgers prevailed 7-3. Big Wease pitched this half of the doubleheader also. Again, the Jacks defense was superb.

All the Jacks successfully reached base at least once. They were led by Paul “Swiss” Geronime who was on six times. Reaching base four times were Mike “Mickey” Jaquette, Bill “Ho-hum” Ohm and Scott “Roman” Pechacek. Samuel “Roundabout” Deetz, Big Wease, Dan “Skunk” Deetz and Joel “Hefty” Affeldt reached three times. On base twice was Kevin “Hurricane” Knerzer. Also reaching base was “Jim “Scoop” Schupbach.

The Apple Jacks will wrap up the season Sept. 15 in La Crescent at Old Hickory Park. They will take on the Highland Prairie Hayseeds and the Roosters of Olmsted County.

If you would like to play baseball by the rules of 1860, kindly call Captain Joel “Hefty” Affeldt at 608-769-1782 or Captain Emeritus Bill “Ho-hum” Ohm at 507-895-6912 for more details. The Apple Jacks Base Ball Club is a community outreach program of the La Crescent Area Historical Society.
