BLAIR/BLACK RIVER FALLS — David “Whiskers/Festus” Alexander Powers, formerly of Black River Falls and recently Blair, went to be with our heavenly Father Monday, April 30, 2018.

David and his wife, Eleanor, have lived at Grand View Care Center, Blair, since Jan. 6, 2017.

David was born to James Edward and Alice Izora (Northy) Powers at home in Ellsworth, Wis., March 10, 1923. David grew up in Ellsworth until 1934, when the family moved to Lake City, Minn. As a teenager, David worked on a local farm milking cows, tending pigs, sheep, chickens and horses.

David served in the Army Infantry during World War II as a Firefighter-Chief and cook, having his certification with the M-1.

He married Eleanor Ellen Simonson, Jan. 26, 1952. From that marriage were six children, James, June (Robert) Anderson, Judy (Doug) Prosch, John, Julia and Jan (Chris Miller). They lived in various towns in Minnesota and finally settled in Black River Falls.

David worked for Waughtal Motor Sales in Black River Falls, for years and soon became known as “Whiskers or Festus” to many of the farmers for the full beard he wore throughout the winters. After retiring, David continued to be called upon by local farmers for his repair knowledge and wisdom of machinery. This was the spark that kept him going and active all the years after retiring. He was also called upon by many local townspeople for his repair knowledge of lawnmowers. Many days you could find him outside in his workshop tinkering on various lawnmowers.

David is survived by his wife, Eleanor; his children; his grandchildren; great-grandchildren; many cousins; nieces; nephews and his beloved Chihuahua, Mocha.

David was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Mark, Elizabeth and Richard.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, from Zwickey Funeral Homes, Melrose Chapel, with the Rev. John Ashland officiating. Burial will be in the Burr Oak Cemetery, County C, with military rites.

Friends may call one hour prior to services Thursday at the funeral home.
