MOORHEAD, Minn. — Arne Richard Carlson, 93, died peacefully in his home at Eventide in Moorhead Tuesday, May 30, 2017, with family at his bedside.
Arne was born July 27, 1923, in Fort Dauphin, Madagascar, to missionary parents, Olaf Christian and Ragna (Lauvold) Carlson. At the age of 13, his parents returned to Madagascar, leaving their sons, Oliver and Arne, to complete high school in the states. He graduated from Augustana Academy in 1942. He served his country in the U.S. Army in Europe, from 1943 to 1946. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1949, and Luther Seminary in 1952.
In 1950, Arne married Nadine Stenshoel, Crookston, Minn. They served parishes in Black River Falls, at Squaw Creek Lutheran and Little Norway Lutheran (1952 to 1956), Lamoure, N.D., Park River, N.D., and Fisher, Minn., and as chaplain to nursing homes in Twin Valley, Minn., and Halstad, Minn., until retiring in 1987.
Arne is survived by his wife, Nadine; children, Reed (Amy) Carlson, Terry (Joe) Melby, Miriam Dakutak and Kurt (Rhona Baron) Carlson; grandchildren, Sarah (Mike) Liljestrand, Sonja Olson, Bethany (Jerome) Ryan, Jesse and Kirstin Dakutak and Polina Carlson; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Natasha, Brooke and Elliott Ryan and Zach Liljestrand; his brother, Oliver (Gene); and sister, Laila Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, E. Roald, Audrey and Haakon Carlson.
Memorials are preferred to the Kabekona Lake Foundation, Global Health Ministries and Lutheran CORE.
Visitation for Pastor Carlson was 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. His memorial was 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in First Lutheran Church, Fargo, N.D.
