A 34-year-old Black River Falls man was charged in Jackson County Circuit court with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft after allegedly breaking into Best Western Lodge in the town of Brockway Oct. 4.

Woody Bird is accused of stealing a television and coffee pot from one of the rooms. According to the criminal complaint, employees noticed the items missing and showed a Jackson County Sheriff's Deputy surveillance footage of Bird leaving the room with the two items. Hotel personnel told police they didn't believe the person who booked the room was responsible for the theft. Police were told Bird and another person left the scene in a red Ford Escape.

Later that day, police matched the description of Bird and the other person with photos posted on the Tomah Police Department's Facebook page in reference to a theft in Tomah. Police in Tomah were able to identify the Ford Escape's registration number, which led to Bird's identification.

On Oct. 20, a Jackson County Sheriff's deputy pulled over an eastbound vehicle in the town of Brockway for speeding. The vehicle had four occupants, one of whom was Bird. The driver was given a warning, and the deputy asked to speak with Bird. According to the complaint, Bird told the officer he went to the hotel to use the swimming pool. He said the item he was carrying wasn't a television but a piece of art he was trying to sell.

Bird was also charged with bail jumping for allegedly violating a bond condition from Sawyer County that prohibits him from committing a crime. He was later charged with another bail jumping violation stemming from a Nov. 3 incident in Black River Falls when he allegedly violated a no-contact order from Sawyer County.
