Summer may be almost over and kids may be going back to school, but there’s still time for festivals and celebrations.

Spanferkel is German for suckling pig, but it’s also Wisconsin’s largest pork fest and it’s held just outside of Jackson County.

Mindoro plays host to the Spanferkel festivities, and stepping into the town the smell of pork in the air is heavy, but so is the atmosphere of fun.

Spanferkel held last weekend serves as the Mindoro Lions Club main fundraising event.

“It was a great weekend to be Spanferkeling,” Mindoro Lions Club treasurer Tom Knudtson said.

The events kicked off on Friday with the punt, pass, kick event to give kids a chance to show of their skills with the pigskin.

Miss Mindoro was also held on Friday night along with community awards.

Friday night went out with a bang at the Spanferkel fireworks and live music.

Saturday had events for every age group and packed it all in for a fun-filled day.

The poker run, tractor ride and 5K Fun Run/Walk all started the morning to get everyone up and moving.

Kids wouldn’t be left out though, but they did get to sleep in as the Little Piglet run didn’t start until 11 a.m.

There were plenty of other things to keep the kids occupied with an inflatable playground, face painting, sawdust pile and cotton candy all providing entertainment.

Adults and kids also got their shot at a corn hole tournament while others played horse shoes instead.

The FFA was in town for it’s tractor rodeo Saturday afternoon.

Sunday was the final day of Spanferkel and started off with two of most people’s favorite things, pie and ice cream.

With a healthy and nutritious breakfast settled, the parade was held right through the middle of Mindoro and was followed by a kiddie pull.
