“Over the River and Through the Woods” won’t happen in southwest Wisconsin this Thanksgiving, thanks to the Republicans in Madison.

A bridge on a side county road close to where I live was damaged and closed to traffic September 2016 − and is still closed. This bridge is one of 2,800 bridges that needs repair according to the data sent by the state to the Federal Highway Commission. And that high number does not include bridges damaged by recent flooding.

Bridges are just the beginning of the trail of neglect since Gov. Scott Walker took office and his Republican majority have taken charge of the state. In the name of conservative reform, our infrastructure has been neglected, environmental protection weakened, public school resources robbed in the name of vouchers, money for expanded health care service refused and funding for a high-speed rail system declined.

I live in the 96th assembly district (Crawford, Vernon and rural Monroe counties). We have had a Republican representing the 96th district for more than 60 years. It’s time for Democrats to step up and stop the carnage. For this reason, people in our district need to vote for Paul Buhr. Paul grew up here, raised his family and farmed here for over 40 years. Paul is running for this assembly seat because he understands critical rural issues and deeply cares about the people who live here. We need Paul Buhr to represent us in the State Assembly!
