The scarecrow contest is back! Contact the Viroqua Chamber Main Street to reserve your lamp post for the contest. Call 608-637-2575 or email email@example.com
Judging: Scarecrows will be judged on three categories by the judging panel. Each judge will give up to 10 points per category. The entry with the most total points wins.
The categories are as follows:
- Eco-Friendly: The scarecrow demonstrates the principle of Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.
- Creative: The idea for the scarecrow is creative and unusual.
- Likely to scare a crow: Typical farm and garden scarecrows made from cast-off clothing, burlap, gunny sacks, jeans, overalls, straw hats, aprons, bonnets, corn shocks, raffia, straw, etc.
In addition, all scarecrows are eligible for the People’s Choice Award. Voting will be open to the general public via ballot boxes.
Awards presentation: Winners will be announced Wednesday, Oct. 24, via social media. The creator of the scarecrow receiving the most points from the judging panel will get $100 worth of Viroqua Bucks.
There are 47 lampposts on downtown Main Street between South Street and Gillette Street. The lampposts are first-come, first-served, with Main Street businesses having first dibs on the lamppost closest to their establishment. Scarecrows must be durable and able to stand up to sun, wind and very likely rain showers. Use care in choosing your materials. All decorations must be firmly attached to your scarecrow. We recommend a 2 x 4 piece of lumber for the central body. A broomstick or 2 x 4 is recommended for the arms. You will need to bring rope or wire to attach your scarecrow to the light post. Feel free to bring additional props like straw bales, cornstalks, etc. Scarecrows and props must fit into a 6 x 4 foot area. If you choose to bring fresh vegetables or fruits (like pumpkins) they must be whole and not punctured or carved, to ensure they last through the duration of the contest.
You are welcome to visit your scarecrow and keep it in good presentable condition. All entries must be hand-made. No commercial costumes, rubber masks, plastic masks etc. will be allowed. Electricity will not be provided. Only solar or wind power for moving parts may be used.
As part of your display, be sure to make a sign with: the name of your entry, your name, group, or service club name, and the lamppost number. (This will help your friends and family to locate your entry when voting.) Your sign should be no larger than 11 x 17 inches.
The scarecrow contest exhibit area is family-friendly. Scarecrows should be whimsical, humorous, mischievous or lovable — not frightening. Monsters, gruesome, bloody or especially scary entries are not permitted. Viroqua Chamber Main Street reserves the right to remove entries they feel to be distasteful or not family-friendly.
Size: The minimum height is 4 feet. The maximum height is 7 feet. Scarecrows and props must not interfere with pedestrian traffic safety.
Set up/duration: You may set up your scarecrow Friday, Sept. 21, through Monday, Sept. 24. All entries must be in place by Monday at 5 p.m. All entries must be removed Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The city of Viroqua and/or the Viroqua Chamber Main Street will not be held responsible for any damage to individual displays.
