The Viroqua cooperative boys hockey team, comprised of skaters from Cashton, Viroqua, Westby and Youth Initiative high schools, traveled to West Salem Jan. 4 and were defeated by an 8-0 score.

The Panthers, a WIAA state tournament qualifier last season, improved to 8-4 this year and were led by a four-goal outburst from forward Kayden Krause.

West Salem scored twice in each of the first two periods and closed out the game with a four-goal third period.

Carter Bergdahl, a Westby High School senior, recorded 36 saves in net for the Blackhawks. Viroqua’s season record slipped to 3-8-1 with the loss.

The Hawks were scheduled to play at La Crosse Central Jan. 9, before returning to the Viroqua Community Arena to host Black River Falls Jan.11 and Madison La Follette Jan. 19.
