In an effort to take a stance on what some students believe to be substandard food offerings in the Westby Area School District students in Westby Middle School began boycotting the noon lunch program last week.

The quality of health care delivered in Wisconsin continues to rank among the highest of any state in the country according to the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Wisconsin had the second best overall health care quality measure score based on 149 measurements. Minnesota narrowly edged Wisconsin out.

The Westby boys baseball team heralded its 2008 season with a 13-6 nonconference win at Sparta Thursday, April 3, followed by a 5-1 victory at Richland Center, Monday, April 7.

About 81 Westby School District citizens packed the Coon Valley Elementary music room to hear the school board discuss issues ranging from how to provide algebra in Coon Valley and Chaseburg to prayer at graduation.

Wednesday, April 21, has been designated as National Secretaries Day. About 28 years ago Nita Mickelson began working at the local medical clinic, and this is where the general public has witnessed the reasons why she deserves this special honor.

Kathy Lewison recently placed first in singles with a score of 588 during the Women’s City Bowling Tournament. Verna Drake placed first with a score of 1728 in all events.

There will be an “Easter Egg Hunt” in Westby this Saturday, April 13, at 2:00 p.m. The event, which is for “Crickets” only, will be held in the Westby City Park. The Crickets, youngest group of the newly-organized Norsemen Youth Club, are from kindergarten through 5th grade. Howard Langhus has consented to be Captain of the hunt. On Saturday afternoon.

Co-valedictorians and co-salutatorians of the Westby High School graduating class were announced and introduced at the National Honor Society banquet held last Thursday evening. At the top are Ilene Larson and Glen Helwig. Co-salutatorians are Sandra Carson and Betty Bekkum.

A service of Holy Communion celebrated in the Norwegian Language will be held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Westby, on Friday, April 12, at 10:00 a.m.

The following contingent of Vernon County selectees passed the physical examination for the army at Milwaukee last week and will leave Thursday from Viroqua for Fort Sheridan, Ill. to enter service: Lester Gilbertson, Ralph Mossholder, Howard Hoff, Donald Spellum, Gordon Henley, Alf Anderson, John Erickson, Gerhard Hansen, Dewey Jernander, and James Sveum.

Arnold Anderson, formerly of the Homstad school, has entered the first grade. He has a brother, Le Roy, who is now a member of the local second grade.

Hjalmer Oium sawed wood for Bagliens last week.

Coming as it does upon the heels of income tax payments, the people of America will face an acid test this month when the Treasury’s Second War Loan drive opens April 12 with an objective of thirteen billion dollars to be raised through sale of Government securities.
