The Vernon County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a man who had been mauled by a bull at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8. According to the report Gary Olerud, age 59 of rural Westby, had been working on a neighboring farm when he was hit in the chest by a bull.

The Hollywood film company, Marzipan Entertainment, has been in the area since early August and was expected to remain in the area through September. After scouting the region, they selected the grounds and buildings of Norskedalen to provide the perfect setting for the production site of a 1040s era film.

On Monday, Sept. 20, members of the Westby Area Historical Society will have a closing on the purchase of their new headquarters. John Walker, the present owner has accepted their bid of $65,000.

Ann Stakston of Cashton came home with a White Ribbon from the 12th annual “Norwegian Exhibition of Woodcarving in the Norwegian Tradition,: sponsored by Vesterheim during Decorah’s Nordic Fest, July 23-25. The wall clock is decorated with acanthus-style carving.

The Coon Valley eighth-grade class recently held election for class officers for the 93-94 school year. Sarah Taylor was elected class president. Nikki Padesky was elected vice president and Justin Cornford was elected the secretary-treasurer.

Floral arrangements of white gladiola and lighted tapers provided the setting for the double ring ceremony uniting Katherine Louise Jefson and Wayne Eldon Bakken in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Westby on Saturday September 7.

Robert Erickson of 110 Washington Street, Westby, has completed academic requirements for a Master of Science degree at the end of the second summer session at Winona State College, Winona, Minnesota. Mr. Erickson is Principal of the Chaseburg Center, Westby Area Schools.

This past year 22 adult leaders with Mrs. Dale Nestingen as community chairman, and Mrs. Marlowe Nelson as neighborhood chairman provided an active Girl Scout program for 23 Brownie Girl Scouts, 42 Junior Girl Scouts and 12 Cadette Girl Scouts here in Westby.

Donald Mockrud, 21, son of Mrs. Sara L. Mockrud of 412 S. Main St., Westby, was recently appointed a navel aviation cadet training center, Pensacola, Fla., for intermediate flight training.

Beginning training at this U. S. Naval Training station is Orvis Maynard Holte, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alf Holte, Westby, Wisconsin.

Aviation Cadet M. U. Nestingen has reported to Dorr Field, Arcadia, Florida, where he will receive one phase of his pilot training leading to receiving his wings.

Ben Logan left Monday to attend a directors’ meeting of the Central Retail Feed association, of which he is the secretary, at Milwaukee.
