TITLE: I Wish I Had

A Red Dress

AUTHOR: Pearl Cleage

How does one find the right balance between love and work and honoring the past while living in the present? Since Oprah recommended this author on her tv show perhaps many of you readers out there are familiar with her style of writing.

The story is about life in tiny Idlewild, Michigan where Joyce has for many years faithfully given her services as a social worker in countless ways to others in need. Now she feels it is time to do something special for herself. What do you think that could be?

Some of the difficulties in life Joyce shares include:

  • The death of her father when she was 16 years old;
  • Mom’s suicide on Joyce’s wedding day;
  • Her 6 year old son gets run over by a car;
  • Her daughter’s death before her first birthday;
  • Her husband’s death.

Is your mind spinning with questions like : What caused these deaths? How long had she been married? How did the accident happen? What injuries did the little boy suffer?

The “Lattimore Boys” were known as trouble makers and their pranks were not very funny because they caused pain and suffering to others. Why would they find joy in running people off the road with their vehicle? Or putting a young lady in the hospital as a result of their carelessness, lack of respect for others, and lack of respect of property. How can their cruel dangerous escapades be stopped?

Romance filters through the story and a facility for black single moms with babies bring some positive changes to many lives. The heart warming answers can teach us a lesson . What is the significance of the red dress? You need to read the book to find out the answer.
