gbb: Kenzie

Westby’s Kenzie VonRuden found herself surrounded by the Cashton defense after grabbing a rebound under the basket.

After only a handful of practices the Westby girls basketball teams kicked off their seasons last week with a pair of non-conference games. The team split the early run falling to Tomah, but beating Cashton.

Head Coach Brian Huebner said Tomah is a very groomed team and Cashton who lost nine of its seniors to graduation last year, is young and scrappy.

On the Norse varsity lineup this season are seniors Kenzie VonRuden, Miranda Del Medico, Lexi Crume, Kiarra Keenlance, Sydney Sherry, Kennedy Ornes junior, Lauren Jacobs and sophomores, Molly Stenslien, Claire Griffin, Mckenna Manske, Josi Bishop, Alayna Winterfield. Huebner also plans to rotate in other JV players throughout the season. Against Cashton, Macy Stellner moved up.

Tomah 66, Westby 49

Westby (0-1) hosted and fell to Tomah High School in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

The Timberwolves received a game-high 27 points from Madison Lindauer to take care of the Norse.

Lindauer made one 3-pointer and hit all eight attempts from the foul line. Madisyn Brey added 15 points and Reis Derousseau 10 for Tomah

Lexi Crume and Kenzie Von Ruden scored 11 apiece for Westby, but with the influx of many younger players into the team’s rotation they struggled against a more experienced Tomah team.

Huebner said the Norse got a slow start, but played well after the first 12 minutes of the game.

“The first 12 minutes of the game we looked completely shell shocked. We allowed their defense to dictate what we could do offensively and we turned the ball over for them to get easy transition baskets,” Huebner said.

For Westby: Lexi Crume 11, Kenzie Von Ruden 11, Miranda DelMedico 5, Molly Stenslien 8, Josie Bishop 8, Kennedy Ornes 6.

Westby 39, Cashton 20

Westby (0-1) hosted Cashton High School in non-conference action on Friday, Nov. 17. Huebner said the Eagles run a swing offense, which paired up well with Westby’s defense.

The Norse won 39-20, but the game was marred by a large number of turnovers, especially for Cashton (26) who was playing its first game of the season. Both teams struggled with accuracy at the basket and overall focus as they learn to mesh as a team before the season conference openers.

Kenzie Von Ruden led the Norse with 16 points in the team’s first win of the season. Von Ruden finished the first half with eight points and added eight more in the second half.

Teammate Lexi Crume found room under the basket several times scoring nine points, while Molly Stenslien led the team with six rebounds.

Shelby Hanson led the Eagles with seven points, followed by Hailey Huntzicker with four.

For Westby: Lexi Crume 9, Kenzie Von Ruden 16, Miranda Del Medico 6, Molly Stenslien 2, Josi Bishop 6.

With numbers down over the past several years, Huebner is elated this year to have enough girls signed on to have three teams, varsity, JV and freshman. In his 11 years of coaching girls hoops this was the first time all three teams won on the same night.

The Norse continue non-conference action traveling to Brookwood on Nov. 27 and Onalaska on Dec. 1.
