The Westby girls basketball team found its winning ways in action last week with wins over Sparta and Black River Falls.

The Norse have been working hard to find the right blend of players, but continues to struggle with turnovers, careless fouls, communication and boxing out. At the same time, Brian Huebner, the Westby head Basketball Coach said the girls are gaining more self-confidence and trust among teammates.

Huebner is also pleased that the Westby girls basketball numbers are stronger than ever this year, other schools like Sparta and BRF are struggling to field teams.

In the first half Westby was able to find ample opportunity for good looks and follow-thru shots hitting 45 percent of its attempts from the field. Both teams played man-to-man defense throughout much of the game, which was a good lesson in ball control and team communication Huebner said. At halftime the Norse held a nine point lead, 24-15.

After the break the Norse stayed one step ahead of the Spartans and kept their composure even when the Spartan’s inched closer on the scoreboard.

Westby had three players finish in double digits, Kenzie Von Ruden 11, Molly Stenslien 10, and Josie Bishop 10. Huebner said Von Ruden continues to play well and has really nice balance to her offensive game, Stenslien isn’t afraid to fight for the ball and Bishop hit three shots from long range.

Seniors Lexi Crume and Miranda DelMedico have a calming effect on the team in tense situation and Alayna Winterfield is developing into a solid inside threat for the Norse.

“The entire team is finding their niche and will continue to do so,” Huebner said.

Also scoring for Westby: Lexi Crume 6, Miranda Del Medico 7, and Alayna Winterfield 4.

Westby 51, BRF 32

Kenzie VonRuden scored a game-high 15 points against BRF, while Alayna Winterfield added 11 to help Westby (3-3, 0-1) secure its first Coulee Conference win of the season.

In an unusual set of circumstances, BRF did not have a JV team and played all grades on varsity. Abby Ross finished with 13 points to lead the Tigers (0-5, 0-2).

Westby pounced on the Tigers early to take a 20-2 lead in the first 12 minutes and led 29-10 at the break. The Norse rotated all of its bench players into the game with most of them seeing solid minutes of court time.

Last season Westby took a hard loss at BRF and this year’s win helps a atone for the loss last season, Huebner said.

“I was very happy with our defensive effort. I felt we rebounded better and we were able to key on BRF’s best players slowing any offensive threats,” Huebner said.

Both teams put up 22 points in the second half. Westby won 51-32.

Also on the scoreboard for Westby: Lexi Crume 4, Kiara Keenlance 7, Sydney Sherry 2, Miranda Del Medico 5, Molly Stenslien 4, and Josi Bishop 3.

The Norse continue its Coulee Conference action hosting Arcadia on Dec. 12 and G-E-T on Friday, Dec. 15.
