On Tuesday, March 4, Eric Frydenlund, chair of the Crawford County Community Fund, met with members of the Roy and Jerry George family to receive a $500 grant from the George Family Charitable Foundation in support of the 2014 Crawford Markets Care program.
The George Family Charitable Foundation was formed in 1996 and has granted more than $350,000 to a variety of organizations and initiatives in the Crawford County area.
“We are happy to assist programs such as the Crawford Markets Care program to better the long-term quality of life in Crawford County,” said Roy George (son of Roy and Jerry). “Not only is this program offering healthy produce to our community but it is supporting our local farmers.”
The Crawford County Community Fund initiated the Crawford Markets Care program in 2009. The program is designed to assist those community residents who are clients of Crawford County food pantries in their purchase of fresh produce at Crawford County farmers markets. Over the past five years, there have been more than 2,200 $5-coupons redeemed, translating to over $11,000 worth of fresh produce purchased from local vendors.
Annually, the Crawford County Community Fund solicits sponsors for the program.
“We are very thankful for this grant from the George Family Charitable Foundation,” Frydenlund said. “We have additional grant applications pending with a number of organizations and agencies. Couleecap has also signed on as a 2014 sponsor. In total, we seek to raise $3,500 for this program.”
Donations for the Crawford Markets Care program are received throughout the year and should be sent to Crawford Markets Care, P.O. Box 13, Seneca, WI 54654. The Crawford County Community Fund, a component of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, Inc., is a tax-exempt public charity. Donations to the Markets Care program are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
The mission of the Crawford County Community Fund is to create stronger communities by matching generosity with economic need. That mission is accomplished by building an endowment to fund a grants program, through the continuation of the Crawford Markets Care initiative, and through an annual county-wide leadership recognition program.
