From Tribune files: A look at who appeared at the Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium in La Crosse

  • 2

The Mary E. Sawyer Auditorium was a bequest to the people of La Crosse by the widow of prosperous lumberman William E. Sawyer in 1941. Before that, the Stoddard Hotel was as close a venue as La Crosse had to host conferences and large events.

After much debate about the location and cost of such an endeavor, the community building was dedicated Sept. 29, 1955, as part of a three-day celebration.

"Holiday on Ice" was a popular show for many years, and several big name celebrities, including Elvis Presley, performed at the "Mary E." Politicians including John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan visited.
