Shoeless, but not aimless: Local band shoots for happy party feel on stage

If you want to throw a party, you need friends, lots of energy, and good, danceable music.

Since 2005, that’s just what Shoeless Revolution has been delivering. The band focuses on creating a big celebration on stage. With seven band members, this jazz/rock/funk band is able to add a wide range of color to the party.

“We feed off the energy of the participating audiences,” said Jack Sabol-Williams, who sings and plays keyboards and drums.

Shoeless Revolution also finds on-stage communication with sprinkles of spontaneity key to putting on a good performance.

Equally important is the band members’ musical pedigree. Drummer/vocalist/guitarist Reed Grimm has been performing on stage since he could walk. As a kid, he sang and traveled with his family band, The Steve Grimm and Colleen Raye Show. Bassist/ vocalist Ben Peterson learned piano in kindergarten, and was active with Grimm in the music program at Ellsworth, Wis. Sabol-Williams and sax/clarinet player Nick Carlson started learning music by sixth grade. Guitarist Eric Streske, sax player Jim Piela, and trumpeter Kevin Klemme all were playing before age 14.

The band members all met at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the music department and then kept up their musical chops playing in the band Three Beers ’til Dubuque.

To keep the Shoeless party rolling, band members have learned additional skills outside of performing. The group books its own shows, keeps its Web sites up to date, sells merchandise and makes sure the company van is running smoothly.

All of this hard work should help expand the size of its parties.

“We want and will play for as many audiences as we can,” said Sabol-Williams. “We find the more places we play, the more people we find who listen and keep coming back to our shows.”

The band plans to finish work on its first album after wrapping up its summer tour.
