The journey to sobriety often begins with pain, guilt and sadness, but the gift of recovery is the opportunity to open oneself to a joy-filled life.

The Franciscan Spirituality Center, 920 Market St., La Crosse, offers a special retreat Feb. 20-21 for people recovering from alcoholism or chemical dependency. “Serenity Retreat: Finding Joy” will explore an understanding of true happiness and joy as it relates to the work of the 12 steps.

The retreat will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, and conclude at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Cost is $135, which includes bedroom and meals. Commuters pay $95, which includes lunch on Saturday. No one will be turned away for inability to pay; confidential financial assistance is available through the FSC’s Norman L. Gillette Sr. Scholarship fund. Registration is due Feb. 13; call 608-791-5295 or visit
