A La Crescent couple have died on a fishing trip in Iceland.
Janet Veit, who worked as a veterinarian at Hillside Animal Hospital in La Crosse, and Brian Schumacher, a lab technician at Gundersen Health System, died Sunday night.
The U.S. Embassy in Iceland told family members that Veit fell into the water while fishing. Schumacher, her husband, jumped into the water to help. The couple was pulled from the water but could not be resuscitated.
“In a world of wonderful people, Janet and Brian were pretty near the top,” said Patrice Veit, who is Veit's sister. “They loved their families, their friends, their colleagues, their dogs and cats, and most importantly, each other.”
The couple were fishing from a boat in Lake Þingvallavatn when the accident occurred, according to the Iceland Monitor.
Schumacher was a graduate of La Crescent-Hokah High School and in addition to working at Gundersen also worked as a guide for the Driftless Fly Fishing Co. in Preston, Minn.
Veit joined Hillside Animal Hospital in 1996 after graduating from the University of Minnesota’s College of Veterinary Medicine and was originally from rural North Dakota.
“There are no arrangements for any services yet as it will take the officials of Iceland and of the U.S some time to process this terrible accident,” Patrice Veit said.
