MINDORO -- Arlan “Les” L. Pfaff, 81, of Mindoro passed away with his family by his side, Saturday, March 3, 2018, at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse.
He was born Jan. 27, 1937, in La Crosse, to Leslie and Carrie (Rommel) Pfaff.
Arlan developed his strong work ethic growing up on the family farm in Mindoro. He graduated from the Mindoro High School in 1954 and served in the U.S. Army, 16th Artillery Group, Fort Sheridan, Ill., from 1959, until being honorably discharged in 1961.
Arlan had a strong sense of civic responsibility as a lifelong member and secretary of the Mindoro Lions Club, being honored twice as Lion of the Year and receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for his service. He was also a long-time member of the Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 of Mindoro; and served for several years as the treasurer of the town of Farmington.
Known as the “Flying Mustang,” he logged millions of miles over his career as an over-the-road truck driver. His favorite pastime was playing cards with his friends and he is remembered for his sense of humor and practical jokes.
Arlan is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 52 years, Mary Christina (Franco); daughter, Natalie (Gerald) Dresch of Nashville, Tenn.; son, Richard (Nicole) Pfaff of Milwaukee; daughter, Lorrie Pfaff of La Crosse; and son, Leslie (Kati) Pfaff of Mindoro; six grandchildren, Samantha, Amber, Carrie, Garrett, Amalia and Mackenzie; two sisters, Vivian (John) Allen of La Verne, Calif., and Vilah (Robert) Beranek of La Crosse; two nieces; and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Archie (Marion) Thompson of Onalaska.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Mindoro Lutheran Church. Pastor Kris Fahey will officiate. Burial will follow in Farmington Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard and the American Legion Post 507, of Mindoro. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at the church.
