Audrey Ruth (Murphy) Mell, 96, died at Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, June 19, 2018.
She was born Nov. 9, 1921, to Charles Burdette and Lydia Johannah (Mundhenke) Murphy in Jamestown, N.D.
She was married to Gordon Edgar Mell Oct. 10, 1941, in Jamestown, just before Gordon’s naval deployment in World War II. When Gordon returned from service he was rehired by the JC Penney Co. in Jamestown, where they settled down to raise their family. Audrey experienced many moves, as her husband was transferred several times while working for JC Penney. In 1967, Audrey and Gordon bought the Coast to Coast hardware store in Zumbrota, Minn., and moved the family to Minnesota, where Audrey was employed by Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for 17 years. In 1987, Audrey and Gordon retired to Sun Lakes, Ariz., where they lived for 22 years, until moving back to Rochester and finally to West Salem.
Audrey is survived by her three children, Renee (Bill) Transburg of West Salem, Randall (Mary) Mell of Caledonia, Minn., and Rodney (Deb) Mell of Rochester; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Kermit Murphy; and sister, Fern (Murphy) Frey and her husband, Gordon Mell.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 16, at Bethany Evangelical Free Church in La Crosse.
