Flora “Flo” E. Merchant, 94, of Tomah, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, at the Greenfield House.
She was born Dec. 4, 1923, to Mannie and Ruth (Miller) Williams in Lafe, Ark. She went to all 12 years of school in Lafe. Upon graduation she moved to Little Rock, Ark. She worked in a defense factory during World War II. While working there, through a close friend, she met her husband, Leo. They were united in marriage Sept. 9, 1944. Flo would say, “He was the best husband ever.” In 1944, they moved to the family farm in the town of Greenfield. Two children were born to Leo and Flo; Don and Mary Ellen. Flo worked as a nursing assistant at the Department of Veterans Affair in Tomah and for the Tomah Care Center. She was a faithful and dedicated charter member and was the oldest current member of the Tomah Baptist Church.
She is survived by her children, Don and Mary Ellen (Mike) Likely both of Tomah; two grandchildren, Richard and Amanda; and a great-granddaughter Kayla; two sisters, Ellen and Delores; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; a daughter-in-law, Mary; a grandson, Michael; her parents; four brothers and sisters; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at the Tomah Baptist Church, 1701 Hollister Ave., Tomah. Pastor Ronald Tobin will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to call at 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church.
