WEST SALEM — John W. Anderson, 92, of West Salem passed away Friday, July 6, 2018, at Morrow Home in Sparta.
John was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Mindoro, to William and Ragna (Christianson) Anderson. John was baptized and confirmed at the Mindoro Lutheran Church by the Reverend Otterson. He began working at the John Larson farm in West Salem at the age of 16. He planted corn with a team of horses and a two-row planter for two years before they bought a tractor. It was on the farm that he met the love of his life, Lorraine Olson, who was hired to help John Larson’s two aging sisters, Mattie and Clara. On March 26, 1949, John and Lorraine were married in the Mindoro Lutheran Church, and they shared 64 wonderful years of marriage before Lorraine passed away in 2013. First they rented and then purchased the farm in West Salem. They were dairy farmers and milked until 1987, at which time they switched to raising beef until they did cash cropping. He planted his last crop of oats April 29, 2018.
He loved to watch things grow and to take care of the earth and the animals. His “hobby” was growing corn. He had numerous plaques and certificates for high yields, beginning in 1956, continuing until 2017. He also refurbished a Farmall C. He enjoyed dancing to polkas and waltzes, playing pool and playing cards with family. One of his favorite times of the year was fall, when he combined corn and went deer hunting. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also liked to talk Norwegian, but later in life he couldn’t find many people that still spoke it. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in West Salem and a member of the Farmer’s Co-operative (now Allied).
John will be greatly missed by his three children, Cheryl Komisarek (special friend, Glenn Mueller) of Greenfield, Wis., and her daughters, Lisa (Eric) Sprangers and children, Julia and Leah and Lori (Jeff) Filsinger and children, Ryan Huebner and Adeline; Barbara (Paul) Gilbertson of West Salem and their children, Craig (Anne) Murphy and children, Meaghan and Kathryn, Travis Gilbertson and son, Calvin, Ted (Lynn) Gilbertson and children, Samuel and Jessica and Tricia (Adam) Jeffords; and Patricia (Robert) Manke of Bangor and their children, Daniel (Cortney) Manke and children, Alex Manke, Tristen, Faith and Abby Hahn, and Paula (Chad) Anderson and children, Bryce, Grant, and Wyatt; sister, Ruby Knudson of Mindoro; and sister-in-law, Mildred Anderson of Union Grove; and Lorraine’s sister, Ardelle Johnson of Bangor; and also many nieces and nephews and others.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lorraine; son-in-law, Jeffrey Komisarek; two brothers, Walter and Donald “Rusty” (Colleen); one brother-in-law, Charles Knudson; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 359 N. Leonard St., West Salem. Pastors Jon and Jean Schmidt will officiate. Burial will follow in Neshonoc Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service.
