Inez Marie Rickman, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, in Portland, Ore., at the age of 95.
She was born June 27, 1921, in the town of Clinton, Vernon County, Wis., to parents, Hjalmar Rudrud and Agatha (Mortenson) Rudrud. She was the fifth child in a family of four brothers and four sisters. She graduated from Westby High School in 1941 and from the Lutheran Deaconess School of Nursing in Chicago, in 1945. She married Elwood Russell Rickman March 28, 1946, in Eugene, Ore. They had three children.
The Rickmans moved several times in their 70 years of marriage, and nearly always lived in a house built by their own hands. Their first house was a one room cottage near campus, in which they lived while Elwood finished college and Inez started her career as a registered nurse. With twin daughters in tow, they lived three years in Ketchikan, Alaska, where Elwood taught in the high school and was band director and where their son was born. Other moves followed but it was during the decades after a return to Eugene that Inez advanced in her career as a nurse. Whether in clinic or hospital, she always served as head nurse, dedicated and respected for her professional understanding, kindness, and ability.
Inez retired early from nursing when Elwood’s summer job as catskinner became full time. The couple spent weeks and sometimes months in their trailer on the job site, enjoying a life in the open surrounded by scenic beauty.
During this period of semi retirement, they lived in Alvadore, Ore. Then came a dozen or more years of full retirement in Rockaway Beach, Ore. By 2010, they had decided to move to Portland for health reasons and to be near their son, John Rickman.
Survivors of Inez Rickman who live in the west coast states are her husband, Elwood Rickman; three children, Christine (Dale) Allyn, Martha (Michael) Sawyer and John (Paula Luft) Rickman; two granddaughters, Mackenzie Allyn and Kimberly Sawyer; and one brother-in-law, Richard (Lynn Hawthorne) Lakin. She is further survived by one brother, Blaine (Carol Dewitt) Rudrud of Westby; a sister-in-law, Beverly (Johnson) Rudrud of La Crosse; and one sister, Alice (Rudrud) Alderman of Madison, Wis.; eight nephews and 12 nieces; many grand and great-grandnieces and nephews; and many cousins.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
