SPARTA — Vernon L. Ziegler, 78, of Sparta passed away Saturday, June 18, 2016, at Gundersen Health Systems, La Crosse, of a massive stroke.
He was born April 8, 1938, to the late Lawrence and Lillian (Gonkee) Ziegler, in Sparta. Vernon graduated from Sparta High School with the class of 1956. He married Bonnie Peterson June 1, 1957. Vernon was a truck driver for 40 years and retired in 2002. He was a member of WWCMA and Fraternal Order of Eagles. Vernon enjoyed dancing, listening to country music and was always one to tell a joke. He gave the gift of life by donating organs, tissue, and bones.
Vernon is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Bonnie; his sons, Todd (Susie) Ziegler and Darrin (Wendy) Ziegler; a daughter-in-law, Holly Ziegler; grandchildren, Jessica (Adam) McCracken, Jenny Kinserdahl, Cassie Ziegler, and Michell (Renee) Ziegler; his brothers, Roland (Karen) Ziegler and Norm (Darleen) Ziegler; a sister, Frances Richardson; sisters-in-law, Beverly Austin, Evonne Busse, and Pat (Roger) Suhr; brothers-in-law, Rodney (Lois) Peterson and Stanley Zillmer; five great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Lillian; infant son, Timothy Ziegler; son, Ricky Ziegler; brother, Mike Ziegler; infant great-grandson, Hunter McCracken; brothers-in-law, Carl Austin, Preston Busse, Fritz O’Neil, and Doug Richardson; sisters-in-law, Marlene O’Neil and Rene Zillmer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Sparta, with Fr. Jerome Patric officiating. Burial will be held at a later date, in the church cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to call 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Lanham-Schanhofer Funeral Home, Sparta, with a prayer service 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue 10 a.m. until the time of Mass, Wednesday, at the church.
