Shirley Lou (Blix) Steckel died Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Chosen Valley Care Center, after suffering a stroke April 2.
She was born May 23, 1930, in Stillwater, Minn., to Effie (Neste) and Clifford Blix. Following graduation from Ladysmith High School, Shirley attended Saint Olaf College and later graduated from Luther Hospital School of Nursing in Eau Claire, Wis.
On Aug. 29, 1953, Shirley married Everett Steckel in Ladysmith, Wis. For their entire married life, the couple lived in Fountain City, Wis., where Everett taught at the high school and Shirley worked as a nurse and administrator at St. Michael’s Home for the Aged. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church in Winona.
Shirley is survived by one daughter, Turi (Michael) Fryer, Stewartville, Minn.; two granddaughters, The Rev. Kirsten (Dr. Justin Kolb), Cairo, Egypt and Lauren Fryer, Stewartville; a great-granddaughter, Joanna Lou Fryer Kolb, Cairo, Egypt; a brother-in-law, Richard (Kathy) Steckel, Merrill, Wis.; and a sister-in-law, Sandra Steckel, Ludington, Mich.
Shirley requested a private family service at the time of burial in Earl, Wis.
A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. with visitation starting at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Central Lutheran Church in Winona.
In lieu of flowers, Shirley and her family request memorials to be directed to Central Lutheran Church; Mayo Clinic or University of Wisconsin Stroke Research; or a charity of donor’s choice.
