The modern cottage kitchen is all about mixing and matching natural materials. A cottage-style home should embrace its structure — exposed wood, brick and stone can all meld together in a wonderfully warm and simple look.

Stick with neutral colors such as grays, whites and taupes. If you want to incorporate a bit of color, the backsplash is a great place to do it. Try using blue or green, or another soothing color that works well with the rest of your home.

For lighting, timeless industrial-style pendants often work best in a cottage-style kitchen. Steel and copper fixtures offer an authentic and classic look that still feels modern. If you’re looking for something a little more glamorous, a crystal chandelier or a more traditional antique pendant is a great contrast against exposed wood and stone.
