Thorny Rose Red Blend 2011

Constellation Brands, the world’s largest wine conglomerate, has done the research. It says the Millennial generation has driven demand in wine consumption.

Thorny Rose is label launched to specifically go after the 21- to 34-year-olds, complete with a funky label and screw-cap packaging. The wine is sourced from Washington’s Columbia Valley.

This is a different take on a classic Bordeaux blend — merlot (48 percent), cabernet sauvignon (48 percent), malbec (3 percent) and syrah (1 percent) — but pushes the fruit with an edge toward sweetness aimed toward younger wine drinkers. There’s plenty of red fruit to taste with very reserved tannins.

Sherry: “Cherry and strawberry flavors, medium tannins and a floral touch of rose and geranium on the finish.” (3 stars)
