In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (HY'-ahn), one of the strongest tropical cyclones on record with winds that reached 195 miles per hour, slammed into the central Philippines. It left more than 7,300 people dead or missing, flattened or swept away more than 1.1 million homes, and displaced more than 5 million.
