Flags were lowered to half-staff at the White House and State Department to mark the passing of former Army general and Secretary of State Colin Powell, who died Monday of complications from COVID-19. Powell was 84. In announcing his death on social media, Powell’s family said he had been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s longtime aide, said he had been treated over the past few years for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer.
