An accused drunken driver slammed his car into a telephone pole on the La Crosse's South Side before driving off Friday evening, police said.

Witnesses told police a white Cadillac speeding west on the 1600 block of Green Bay Street lost control and slid into the pole about 7 p.m., according to La Crosse police reports.

One bystander twice tried to remove the keys from the ignition before driver Miles Koenig, 21, put the car in reverse and drove off, reports stated.

Police found the car several blocks away and Koenig in the driver's seat, bleeding from the head. He confessed to being drunk and called his mother to tell her he was going to jail, reports stated.

Koenig failed field sobriety tests and had a 0.20 percent blood-alcohol concentration on a breath test, according to reports. He was treated at a local hospital and taken to jail.

Koenig, of 1612 S. East Ave., faces charges of operating while intoxicated, operating while suspended, reckless driving and hit-and-run when he appears Wednesday in La Crosse County Circuit Court.

Koenig began serving two years of probation Aug. 17 for a domestic case.
