A Holmen man led authorities on a five-hour standoff in Vernon County early Wednesday after committing an armed robbery at a La Crosse bar, authorities said.

Alan Fry, 35, at about 11 p.m. Tuesday pointed a shotgun at a bartender at My Place, 3201 South Ave., and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to La Crosse police.

He fled from La Crosse officers at a high rate of speed on Hwy. 33 until he left the city.

Later that night, Fry fled from a sheriff’s deputy from Coon Valley to South Natwick Road between Westby and Viroqua when he lost control and entered a ditch after running over spike strips, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department.

Fry displayed a shotgun before surrendering to police about 5 a.m. after they deployed tear gas during the standoff, the department stated.

Fry faces charges of theft, armed robbery, fleeing and operating after revocation when he appears in Vernon and La Crosse County Circuit Courts.

So if he was "other than white" and displayed a shotgun, would he be dead right now?
