A La Crosse man could face prison time after he was accused of sexually assaulting a woman who was too drunk to consent to sex.

Curtis M. Stevens

Curtis M. Stevens, 38, was charged with second-degree sexual assault Tuesday in La Crosse County Circuit Court. If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 40 years.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Oct. 19, Stevens made contact with a woman he had previously known through work.

A day later, after midnight on Oct. 21, Stevens picked up the woman from a downtown bar and drove her back to his apartment. There, the woman told Stevens that she was not feeling well; she was drunk to the point of not being able to move, she said.

The woman told police that Stevens began to perform sex acts on her, despite her repeatedly telling him to stop, and then had sexual intercourse with her.

The woman told police that, during the assault, she thought about kicking him and running away. She decided against it, doubting she would be able to stand and fearing that Stevens might become violent.

In an interview with police, Stevens denied that he and the woman had sex, saying she passed out shortly after they reached his apartment.

Stevens has a lengthy criminal record that includes drug and domestic abuse charges, though this is the first time he has been charged with a felony.
