A La Crosse man faces criminal charges after police say he drove while intoxicated and caused a crash.
Michael Jameson, 26, is charged with operating while intoxicated—sixth offense, possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession with intent to deliver THC, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a motor vehicle while revoked and failure to install ignition interlock device.
He faces up to 10 years in prison for the first charge, 15 years in prison for the second charge and three years six months in prison for the third charge.
According to the criminal complaint:
A Wisconsin State Trooper working in Juneau County Dec. 3 received a report of a two vehicle collision on I-90/94 near milepost 63. The collision was described as “car versus a semi tanker.”
Upon arriving at the scene, the Trooper spoke with the driver of the car to make sure he was still breathing.
The driver, identified as Jameson, was “pinned in the driver seat with his seat belt on slumped over the deployed airbag.” Jameson was awake but speaking incoherently and moaning. He was “speaking in a slow manner while slurring his words.”
The Trooper observed Jameson’s eyes to be glassy. The odor of alcohol was detected coming from Jameson’s breath.
The driver of the semi-tanker said he was traveling in the right lane at about 60 MPH when he was “struck from behind” by Jameson’s vehicle. The tanker received “disabling damage” and the brakes “no longer worked.”
While performing a records check, the Trooper was informed Jameson had five prior OWI convictions. He was currently outside of his hours on his occupational license and was originally revoked for an OWI. Jameson was required by law to have an ignition interlock device and was subject to a .02 blood alcohol concentration.
The Trooper looked through the vehicle and observed “several indicators of possible drug use.” Cash was strewn throughout the vehicle in the form of multiple 100 and 20 dollar bills, several scented pine tree air fresheners were on the floor of the vehicle along with three bottles of cologne and a container of eye drops.
Jameson was transported to a regional hospital by ambulance. The Trooper asked Jameson how much he had to drink. Jameson said he had several beers. When asked how recent his last drink was, he would not reply.
A preliminary breath test performed on Jameson revealed a “weak sample” with a reading of .096 blood alcohol concentration.
The Trooper was informed Jameson had a partially collapsed lung.
A Juneau County Judge approved a search warrant of Jameson’s blood at about 4 a.m. A blood draw was performed by a medical technician about three hours later.
A plastic baggie with an unknown white powdery substance was found on Jameson’s person during preparation for the blood draw, along with a digital scale and a “considerable amount of cash.”
An official from a local towing company called Tomah dispatch Dec. 5 to report a substance suspected to be marijuana was found along with a safe containing cash. Evidence was turned over to law enforcement.
Jameson told the Trooper Dec. 17 he had been clean from drugs and alcohol for about three years, but admitted to going to a bar in La Crosse before the crash.
The white substance found on Jameson was tested and presumptively confirmed the presence of cocaine or its extracts.
Jameson is not currently in the Juneau County Jail. His initial appearance in court is scheduled for Jan. 9 at the Juneau County Justice Center.
