One of two men charged in the shooting death of a Sparta man during an attempted robbery last year faces 73 years in prison after pleading no contest to felony murder, according to the Monroe County District Attorney’s office.

Turner Wood, 23, also pleaded no contest in Monroe County Circuit Court to felon in possession of a firearm, distribution of meth and felony bail jumping. His sentencing is Feb. 23.

Wood and Matthew Rasmussen, 23, entered 508 N. Water St. in Sparta about 7:30 a.m. May 17 wearing masks before Wood shot 27-year-old Adam Garcia in front of at least two other people, according to a complaint.

A witness told police Wood threatened to shoot Garcia again before ordering a woman out of the house and leaving the area.

Officers found Garcia shot in the chest. He died at a hospital.

The evening before, Wood said, he bought a half-ounce of methamphetamine and learned there was a $2,000 “pay out” for whoever confronted Garcia with a gun. He admitted to buying the gun used to kill Garcia in exchange for meth and $50 at a gas station, the complaint stated.

Rasmussen is charged with felony murder as party to the crime, aiding a felon and bail jumping. His case is pending.
