SPARTA — A Sparta police officer escaped serious injury Sunday when he was struck by a car while making an arrest.

Officer Brian James was involved in a traffic stop around 8:40 p.m. on Hwy. 16 near Riverwood Place when he was hit by a passing car, according to the Sparta Police Department. James was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and released with non life-threatening injuries.

The motorist, who has not been named, remained on the scene.

Other officers were present as part of the initial stop of a vehicle suspected of being connected to a burglary and arrested 33-year-old Marcus Anderson on suspicion of bail jumping, criminal trespass and various traffic violations, said Lt. Emilee Nottestad.

Nottestad said James is expected to return to light duty.
