BLACK RIVER FALLS — Eight people were hurt early Tuesday when a van attempted to change lanes in front of a semitractor-trailer on I-94 East near Black River Falls.

According the Wisconsin State Patrol, the collision happened around 1:12 a.m. when a van driven by Jayden Gjertseth of Black River Falls attempted to pass the truck driven by Jason Gilberts of Willmar, Minn. The semi overturned and landed partially on the van.

Gjertseth was trapped in the van after the crash. He was extricated and airlifted to a hospital, and seven other people were taken to area hospitals. The semi driver was uninjured.

I-94 East was closed for about four hours. The truck was carrying processed chicken and turkey.

The crash remains under investigation by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
