“American Idol” fans in the Coulee Region may have a new reason to watch: Reed Grimm, a former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student who was lead singer for the popular band Three Beers Til Dubuque while living in La Crosse.

Now Grimm lives in the Twin Cities, is in the band Shoeless Revolution, and is a contestant on “American Idol.”

On Wednesday, former bandmate Ryan Torgerson saw an “American Idol” commercial that’s been making the rounds on Facebook. It features Grimm.

“I saw the commercial and called him,” Torgerson said. “This is crazy. I know he’s auditioned other times, but he didn’t tell anybody that he went (to Pittsburgh) and auditioned.”

Grimm, who is under some pretty severe strictures about what he can and cannot say about the experience, said mostly he cannot say anything.

“I tried out years ago. I gave it a whirl again, and they got me on camera,” Grimm said. “At this point, I need to talk to Fox publicity to see what I can say.”

Still, he called the commercial “awesome.”

Torgerson is pretty sure the commercial means good news for Grimm.

“He got through, I’m pretty sure. They tell those people not to tell people if they went through,” Torgerson said. “He is known as one of the best around here. I wish I was half the musician Reed Grimm is. I think he will win this year.”

When to watch: The 11th season of “American Idol” kicks off with a two-hour premiere at 7 p.m. Jan. 18 on Fox TV.
