Reed Grimm’s journey on “American Idol” ended Thursday night. America voted and said no to the jazz-scatting former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student and lead singer of Three Beers Til Dubuque.

“He’s real talented,” said producer Jimmy Iovine, after watching his performance, “but he’s way too kitschy for me. Way too cabaret. He’s never going to make it on this show.”

But the three judges —Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler — who loved him so much in previous rounds, stayed true and chose him as the last of six contestants to compete in the wild card round where three more people moved on.

He sang “Use Me” by Bill Withers. At song’s end, Jackson told him, “You’re one of the most different artists we’ve had try out for this show.”

But maybe too different because the judges passed on him, ending his run on the show.
