Rematch: Kapanke poised to challenge Shilling for 32nd District Senate

Moderator Joe Heim stands between Dan Kapanke and Jennifer Shilling as they debate Aug. 2, 2011, at the WKBT-TV studios.

Former state Sen. Dan Kapanke is poised to challenge the woman who took his seat in a recall election in the wake of the passage of Act 10, the law that stripped most public employees in Wisconsin of their collective bargaining rights.

The La Crosse Republican's campaign committee, Kapanke for Senate, has registered with the Government Accountability Board.

Kapanke was elected to the 32nd District seat in 2004 and won re-election in 2008 before then-95th District Assembly Rep. Jennifer Shilling defeated him in the recall election in August 2011.

Shilling was elected to a full term in November 2012 with 58 percent of the vote. Now Shilling leads the minority Democrats in the state Senate.

Kapanke also gave 10-term U.S. Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, the toughest re-election campaign of his career. Kind got 50.3 percent of the vote and Kapanke 46.5 percent in 2010 in the 3rd District race.
