Criminal charges are pending against a La Crosse man accused of raping a woman and inflicting an injury so severe that it left her blind in one eye.
David Davis, 36, faces charges of first-degree sexual assault, aggravated battery, strangulation and disorderly conduct when he returns Monday to La Crosse County Circuit Court. He is free on a $500 cash bond set Thursday by Circuit Judge Gloria Doyle.
The woman told La Crosse police investigators Davis tried to force her into taking Ecstasy at a South 16th Street apartment early Oct. 9 after they met up at a bar in downtown La Crosse.
She refused the drug before Davis held her to a bed, removed their clothing and choked her as he raped her, according to reports.

He pushed away a man who tried to intervene and punched her in the face, reports stated.
The victim underwent surgery for a broken eye socket and told police she didn’t know whether she would regain vision in her right eye.
Davis denied assaulting the woman and told investigators that he had not seen her in six months, although he is captured on surveillance video walking with her downtown early Oct. 9.
