Assembly Speaker welcomes special session on school safety

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said Tuesday he is open to reconvening after saying the Assembly was done for the session.

The Republican leader of the state Assembly is open to reconvening for a special session to address school safety.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, said even though legislators have completed their work for the regular session he welcomes a call from Gov. Scott Walker to bring lawmakers back into session.

“We want every Wisconsin parent to feel confident that their child is safe at school,” Vos said in a statement. “I look forward to working with my legislative colleagues and the governor to determine how Wisconsin might address these concerns and partner with law enforcement and school officials in this ongoing discussion.”

The announcement comes a day before hundreds, and possibly thousands, of students are expected to march to the state Capitol in favor of stricter gun regulations as part of a national demonstration marking one month since a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, left 17 dead.

Walker on Monday wouldn’t commit to calling a special session, but said “without a doubt” there is interest in the Assembly and Senate working on a school safety bill. He previously announced he was working on legislation and said Monday “it will come up before next week.”

It is time our state 'legislators' start doing the work of the constituents they swore to represent - not their out of state donors and other special interest lobbyists - that is dereliction of duty. Fitzgerald is so busy defending Walker and his special cronies that they never get the real work done. Time to rid our statehouse of all the deadwood.
