There are 280 in all. They range in age from 18 to 45. Two were women. All made the ultimate sacrifice. Whether they volunteered or answered a draft notice, these soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines from La Crosse County lost their lives while serving their country.

More than half died during World War II. That’s more than four times the number killed in either World War I or the Civil War.

The first, Ezra Hundt of Bangor, died Nov. 1, 1813, in the War of 1812. The last, Nick Dewhirst, a 25-year-old Army lieutenant from Onalaska, was killed July 20, 2008, during a firefight in Afghanistan.

Not sure who compiled this, but there are at least several names of La Crosse civil war soldiers who died in battle or of wounds and are missing from this list, including Capt. Wilson Colwell, Company B (La Crosse Light Guards), 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers (Iron Brigade). Colwell was the sixth mayor of La Crosse. Other La Crosse soldiers of Co. B who died in battle include Norman McHardy, Ed Brewster, Ed Potter, Oscar Bradford, Anton Knobloch, and several other La Crosse men who served with Co. B. William Stace transferred from Co. B, 2nd Wisconsin to serve on the Army's river gunboat service and died when a Confederate cannonball hit the boiler of the USS Mound City. Charles Bushee died at Andersonville prison. There are more. All these men entered the service at La Crosse. The 2nd Wisconsin Regiment suffered more casualties as a percentage than any other regiment in the entire Union army.

Not to quibble but Mr. Hundt couldn't have been from Bangor as the place didn't exist yet and no white settlers were even close to there. WI was tech part of Canada & was British.
